A packed house gathers in the Great Hall of Cooper Union.

They have come in freezing ice and snow to hear the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Professor Wangari Maathai.

Friends have brought friends, have brought more friends.

Martin Rowe, co-founder of Lantern Books, welcomes people and introduces Kerry Kennedy, founder of Speak Truth to Power.

Kerry Kennedy talks about the linkages between human rights and environmental conservation.

Kerry Kennedy hails Wangari Maathai as a courageous fighter for human rights in Kenya and a great example of speaking truth to power.

Wangari Maathai joins Kerry Kennedy on stage.

An appreciative audience.

An appreciative speaker.

"There have been many people who are responsible for our success, many of them, I'm sure, in the audience."

"[The Nobel Committee] . . . did not go to those who were in power. The Committee went to the grassroots because that's where we are and that's where we are trying to make the change. And they are telling us we have what it takes."

"Poverty is both a cause and a symptom of environmental degradation. We need to get to the root causes of the issues that the millennium development goals are seeking."

"It is very important for us to promote fair trade; to allow for markets of poor countries to access the developed markets."

"I am quite sure that if these men and women, mostly men of power, if they really wanted they could find mechanisms to take care of the debts and remove this burden from the people, from the governments."

"If we could bring all our movements together, if we could work together now, and come to a convergence that we could indeed reshape the future, we could produce a new world."

"For the people, especially the people from developed countries, I want to appeal for addressing the issue of over-consumption."

Thank you.

The line forms for a book-signing.
