A remarkably rich document, encompassing vast areas of Christian/Buddhist monastic concerns.—Library Journal

A historical record of an important movement and a highly accessible spiritual guide.—Common Boundary
In 1996, His Holiness the Dalai Lama joined with his fellow Buddhist and Christian monastics and scholars at Gethsemani Abbey, Kentucky, to discuss the spiritual life. This book is a unique collection of the extraordinary conversation that took place, as these men and women religious examined the nature of each others practices, scriptures, experiences, and beliefs through their different lenses. Featuring the thoughts of the Dalai Lama, Ewert Cousins, Ven. Yifa, Mary Margaret Funk, and Zoketsu Norman Fischer, The Spiritual Life is a work of grace and discernment from individuals attempting to live with authenticity and humility.

Professor Donald Mitchell teaches at Purdue University. He is the author of Buddhism: Introducing the Buddhist Experience; the co-editor (with James Wiseman) of The Spiritual Life and Finding Peace in Troubled Times; and co-editor with William Skudlarek of Green Monasticism.
