The Times: Are they a-changin''
For those interested in the future of the printed and bound word versus the digitized and downloaded word,
this article by techie John Siracusa is must reading. He makes a compelling case that maps Lantern's video
on the future of publishing. The bottom line is that publishing is changing in a seismic manner, and publishers of the printed word are going to have to change their whole business model.
That means more titles printed on demand, more specialized printing, more digital readers, more diverse content, less authorial and publishing-house control over piracy, and much less obvious and concentrated revenue streams. Some people are going to become very rich, but, as is always the case, they almost certainly won't be authors . . . or publishers.
