Whites only? Again?
Everywhere you look these days, what you once took for granted is being rolled back. The
Voting Rights Act (1965), one of the keystone legislative achievements of Lyndon Johnson's presidency, is up for renewal, and
Republicans are holding it up, because, frankly, they don't think that the U.S. doesn't need it anymore. What country do they live in, again? Then there is the
International Whaling Commission's
decision to increase whaling (excuse me, "sustainably harvest" whales) again.
It just goes to show you: there is no victory or moral achievement that someone somewhere doesn't want to change back or water down. You can never assume anything about entrenched interests. They never give up, and nor should we.
