The Prince and the Walker
One of Lantern's soon-to-be distributed authors is
John Francis, whose book,
Planetwalker, tells his incredible story. After seeing an oil spill off San Francisco Bay in 1971, Francis resolved not to use transportation that depended on oil. This morphed into an additional vow of silence. Both lasted seventeen years, as he traveled the country on foot or bike, strumming his banjo and managing to obtain a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D., without saying a word (he did a lot of gesticulating, as you can imagine).
Anyway, we're thrilled to be involved with John and his work, so look out for
Planetwalker on our website soon. By the way, when the UK's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla (back to the camera in photo to the right) came to the U.S. recently they stopped off at an organic market in Point Reyes Station, where John lives, and met the man himself. No news yet on what they talked about, but John's looking into walking across England, after he's crossed Cuba, walked the Great Wall of China, and walked across the States (again). Busy man.
