The Lantern Books Blog: Martin Rowe

Martin Rowe

I'm the co-founder of Lantern Books. I came to the United States in 1991 and took a Master's Degree in Religious Studies at NYU, which after my bachelor's degree in English four years earlier gave me the perfect grounding in literary apocalypticism to work in publishing.

I'm also a vegan. I stopped eating air and land animals in January 1989, to see how long I could live without them. Given that my diet consisted mostly of bread and pig's liver, it wasn't too difficult to see the benefits of a meatless diet. The following year, I deigned to extend the courtesy of non-consumption to the fishes of the sea, after a confrontation with a live lobster, who, in a supreme act of self-sacrifice, became the last sea creature I ate. That was some lobster! Eggs and dairy followed in 1993, and I haven't regretted anything, although I await a truly delicious vegan cheese that makes my salivary glands wrinkle just like Edam used to.

Outside of vegetarianism and animal advocacy, I am interested (in no particular order) in the philosophy of religion and psychology of faith, The West Wing (the Aaron Sorkin years), cricket (the game and not the insect), public policy, and bad pop music from the 1970s.

I am also the author of Nicaea: A Book of Correspondences, a novel of such refinement that only a few, very select individuals have read it. I edited the collection The Way of Compassion and co-founded the monthly magazine Satya, which I edited from 1994 to 1999. Since I left, the magazine has improved by leaps and bounds.
